Our Trip to Mount Snowdon

During the 2014 summer holidays my family and I went to Wales to climb Mount Snowdon. It took about five hours to travel to the hostel in Snowdonia from our home. It was a youth hostel run by YHA and our room number was 5. We had to spread the sheets and put the pillow cases on the pillows. After that we had a good nights sleep so that we would get lots of rest before the next day, which would be the day that we set off to climb the mountain.
The next day we all woke up and went to the canteen to have our breakfast. My brother and I had six Weetabix each so that we would have plenty of energy for the climb. My sister, who had just turned five years of age at the time, only managed to eat two Weetabix.
When we got to the mountain we had to wait for about twenty minutes before we finally managed to get a parking space. Once we had parked the car we began our climb along the Miner’s Track. The first part of the trek was quite flat. This part of the trek was quite an easy walk and we passed a few lakes, ponds, streams and a swamp. One of the lakes seemed to have the shape of smiley face on the surface if it which was made out of weeds.
We passed some buildings that were really old and no longer used. We think that they used be factories of some kind.
Once we got close to the mountain we could see that the top of it was going into the clouds and this made it look a bit scary. I decided to call it the ‘Mountain of Doom’!
As soon as we could see that the track was becoming steep and rocky we decided to take a break. At this stage climbing up the path and over the rocks was very tiring. We found that we needed to take quite a few breaks. We were surprised to find sheep this high up the mountain.
After the rocky part of the trek there was a path up a steep slope to the top of the mountain. When we finally got to the top of the mountain it felt really good but I was was also really tired and didn’t feel like going back down. From the top of the mountain we could see a lake near our hostel which was a few miles away! It was really windy at the very top and my dad had to hold me so that I didn’t get blown away.
Near the top of the mountain there was a diner where we could buy some snacks from. We also bought some some souvenirs whilst we took a little break and I chose to buy a keyring with a light on it. We also bought some certificates to prove that we had climbed up the mountain.
After we had rested for an hour at the diner we set off to go back down the mountain. It was much quicker to go down than it was to go up but we had to be more careful because it was quite steep and much easier to slip and fall. It also started to rain which made the rocky surfaces slippery.
It was raining so much that we had to put on our ponchos. We didn’t really know how to put on our ponchos properly and so we accidentally made lots of holes in them. It was raining so much that we couldn’t even see the face in the smiley face lake.
When we got back to the gate from where we set off we were drenched and exhausted but very happy and feeling proud of ourselves. It had taken us four hours to climb up the mountain but only one hour to get back down again. Getting back into the car was a bit of a struggle because we had to take off our ponchos and then rush to get into the car so that we don’t get even wetter.
Finally, we set off back to the hostel. I can’t remember much about that evening, I guess that is because I was so tired that I had a really good night’s sleep because of all that climbing that we did!
Well done!! Despite the rain, it seems like you enjoyed your trip! And I enjoyed reading it.

Thank you for saying that you enjoyed it. You’re right, I didn’t enjoy the rain that much but I did have fun overall.
Very well written. I really enjoyed reading it. The old buildings around mount snowden are former mine buildings. Coal mining was a big industry in Wales. Their closure in the 1980’s is one of the main reasons Wales still has high unemployment and the welsh still do not speak well of Margaret Thatcher.
Thanks Uncle Mark. That would explain why the track that we went on is called the “Miner’s Track”.
It took you four hours to climb up the mountain and only one hour to come down! Did you roll down?
On the flat bit at the bottom we were running because of the rain!
That sounds hard!!!!!
I’ve been on miners track
